Thirty three international delegates will be coming to Letterkenny next week as part of a project that aims to inform people about development issues, mobilise greater public support for action against poverty, give citizens tools to engage critically with global development issues, fostering new ideas and changing attitudes.
They represent 15 different organisations from ten countries including Croatia, Poland, Bulgaria, Malta, Greece, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Denmark and Belgium.
Donegal County Council is involved with delivering the LADDER project or to give it its full title, Local Authorities as Drivers for Development Education and Raising Awareness
Its brief is to change attitudes and improve public understanding of issues and difficulties facing developing countries and their peoples; increase active engagement of European citizens in attempts to eradicate global poverty, promote justice, human rights, and sustainable ways of living.
Donegal County Council is one of 26 partners and 20 associate partners from 18 EU and 17 non-EU Countries participating in the project.
The visiting delegates along with staff from Donegal County Council will be taking part in a three-day training course delivered by the Hague Academy for Local Governance (Netherlands) to prepare them to deliver National and Local training on Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) over the next two years.
DEAR aims to inform EU citizens about development issues, mobilise greater public support for action against poverty, give citizens tools to engage critically with global development issues, fostering new ideas and changing attitudes.
This initiative forms part of the social inclusion brief of Donegal County Council which aims develop and sustain a socially inclusive society where everyone has an opportunity to access and benefit from services; where everyone feels connected to and part of the community in which they live.
If you are an organisation or community group working in the field of active citizenship, labour and welfare issues, volunteering, youth or gender equality you are invited to the International Cooperation Workshop which will be held in the Letterkenny Public Service Centre at 10am on Friday 17 July.
This workshop will include a presentation from Donegal County Council on how it has benefited from its involvement in European projects and there will be more information on the LADDER project and ALDA - The European Association for Local Democracy (LADDER lead Partner). There will also be an opportunity to discuss how your organisation could benefit from working collaboratively with other EU organisations to jointly seek funding, share ideas and more.
